**San Jose:** The family of 19-year-old Sam Nelson has accused OpenAI over his death after he allegedly followed advice from ChatGPT about combining medicines with alcohol. Nelson, a student at the University of California, died last year after taking an excessive amount of medication. According to his family, he had mixed a painkiller and a medicine used for depression with alcohol before consuming them.

In the hours immediately before his death, Nelson had reportedly sought advice from ChatGPT about whether taking the medicines together was safe, his mother told a US congressional hearing. She also submitted more than 700 chat records between her son and ChatGPT as evidence. The case remains a matter of allegations by the family, and the claims have not been finally determined by a court.

The family alleges that ChatGPT initially refused to answer some of Nelson’s questions about medicines and substances. However, they claim that after changes made by OpenAI to increase user engagement, the chatbot began providing guidance regarding drug quantities and combinations.

The family further argues that OpenAI’s lack of responsibility contributed to Nelson’s death. OpenAI has expressed regret over the young man’s death and stated that the AI model used by Nelson has since been discontinued. The company is facing a lawsuit filed by Nelson’s parents, who allege that ChatGPT’s advice contributed to his fatal overdose. The case has not been decided.

During the hearing, former Meta researcher Jason Sattizahn also testified about what he described as technology companies prioritising user engagement over safety. Sattizahn, who worked at Meta from 2018 to 2024, has publicly alleged that he was instructed to focus on engagement above safety for AI-integrated products.

The testimony has added to the broader debate over AI safety and the responsibility of technology companies when users seek sensitive information from AI systems. Nelson’s family maintains that the chatbot’s responses and OpenAI’s product decisions played a role in the tragedy, while the legal allegations remain subject to the ongoing case.
